 OLDE ORIGINALS ALL-STAR LIST- THE PLAYERS, ADMINISTRATORS, SUPPORTERS::

PLAYING FOR THE OLDE ORIGINALS FROM 1971- CURRENT:
Don Bumgardner- (1971-81) the club’s first hooker, was the team’s coach for the first 10 years- a UNC graduate and selected to NC RFU team six times.

Leon Bumgardner- Don’s father- is thought to be the club’s “number 1 supporter” up until his death in 1987.

Bob Cordle- a founding member of the club as was Don B., a Davidson College Grad. who was the school’s MVP for 1961-starring in football and track. Fullback.

Rick Harris- a NCSU graduate whom came to the Originals in 1974. He was a standout Scrum-half and helped form the NC RFU in 1976. Picked for NC RFU selects twice.

Mike Bamgarner- Cousin of Don- Mike was the club’s first A side scrum half for much of the years of 71-83’. As prison warden- hosted rugby match at Salisbury prison-1980

Joe Tompkins- Organizer of Originals socials and a returning Vietnam war veteran- Joe Played at the fullback position mainly on the B side from 74-83’.

Andy Turton- The Originals captain from 74-83’- Andy was around when the club played At the old Tega Cay field-early 70’s. He played for Leeds in England. Club Pres. 1981 died in 1994. Combined with Raley Miller on many tries and was NC select side twice.

Robert Hileman- (79-84’) Came to the Originals from the Chicago Lions and at 6’4” 245 was a number 8. He moved to second row and teamed with Mike Vead.

Ken Peterson- (77-85’) Ken was one of the best administrators the club had in the early years. He was President of NC RFU three years and a former college wrestler.

Jimmy Taylor- (71-82’) Jimmy was a founding member and returning Vietnam veteran who played prop and hooker. Club treasurer for 7 years- became a referee.

Dean Butchovitz- (77-86’) Dean was a flyhalf and played mostly on the “killer B’s” He was key in building Skillbeck Park- especially the deck. Became a ref in 1985.

Jerry “Raley” Miller-  maybe the best athlete of the 70’s-80’s for Originals-was selected to E R U teams in 80-83-84. Went on ERU Wales tour of 83’. Played at wing.

Eddie Ray Stoudemayer-  (71-83’) one of best flankers ever for Originals, was on undefeated fall 1983 team that went 10-0. Also played at the centers.

Chuck Hailey-  (71-85’) Chuck was one of the members of the now defunct Charlotte Gargoyles (74-79’). He played scrum-half and flanker and was on the social committee.

Mary Olive Johnson-  Mary Olive played for the old Charlotte Harlots Women’s club in the 1970’s and was an architect by trade who helped get the plans approved for the Clubhouse. She was one of the four “founders” of CRFC in 1971 and a NCSU grad.

Bill “Flamo” Randell-   (73-85’) Played at Indiana U. and started the club at Appalachian State U. A flanker- he was known to travel with his trombone and start a conga line at parties. He was a master at the post match social songfest.

Chris Martin-  (75-82’) A Clemson graduate- played number 8 at 6’2” 200. A line-out artist who used number 8 pick up plays to score tries and finished career with Atlanta High Country RFC. Ran the Charlotte Marathon one year.

Wade Otey-  (73-74,79,85-89) Wade learned to play for the Originals in 73-74, then attended ECU and returned in 79’. He mostly played B-side 2nd row and then moved to Nashville in 81’. He returned in 85’ and was club Pres. in 86-87. He was a key participant in the building of Skillbeck Park.

Simon Roe-  (72-85’) Simon was the club President in 1985 and grew up playing soccer in England. He was a B side prop for Charlotte and donated materials from his printing  business for Originals use over the years. He was Andy Turton’s best friend (died 94’).

Rich Brendle   (80-86’) Played for NC select side 80-85 and teamed with Lee, Hewins, Charles, Hileman, Cochell, and Vead, among others. Made ERU South 81,82,84. Key in building of Skillbeck Park, owns construction company.

Dave Dickson-   (81-87) Vanderbilt scrum-half that made the Eagles in 85-87'. Played h-s rugby in Chicago area. Made All- ERU team 81-87’. Played against Japan In first match with Eagles in 86’. Selected in 85’ also- but injured. Went on three ERU tours to Wales, Canada, and Bermuda. Named to first US World Cup squad in 1987 and played at Australia. Also played fly half.

Robert McLeod-  (75-80’) Vietnam veteran from Boston who played wing and served as club president 92-93’. Along with wife Janice, members of social committee, and long time supporters. Robert is also an ardent support of the Olde Originals nickname and the “old man’s” icon that goes with it. The club has had the nickname since 1974.

Virgil Ehler-  (79-86) Played for Charlotte Gargoyles before they folded in 79’. Made ERU South squad in 81’ and NC select side 78-81. Played for Raleigh 82’. Died 2002.

Jim Shannonhouse-  (72-77) Jim was a 6’ 1” 200 pd. prop who once sky dived from a  plane in full rugby kit just in time for kickoff! Jim is an attorney.

Jim Hewins-  (79-91’) Played for Charlotte Gargoyles before they folded in 79’. Started playing with Lynchburg RFC VA. A 6’3” 260 prop, he was a line out stand out and  made the ERU team in 84- going on the Wales Tour. Came out of retirement in 91’ to prop the entire season with Tom Wilkinson- a big factor in club going to ERU final Four that year. Helped build Skillbeck Park.

Rick “Spoony” Avate   (83-94) Played at Bethlehem RFC PA and moved to Charlotte in 83’. A fly-half with some great moves- he had high kick and in his first season- the club went 10-0. A 7’s star- made the ERU 7’s squad in 84-85. Selected to ERU teams  in 84, 85, and 87’, at inside center. Moved to Raleigh in 94’. Helped build Skillbeck park.

Pat George-  (80-94’) Pat has employed over 80Originals with his tree cutting company and along with Gordon Reid and Tom Eskew (his employees and ruggers) were Chief in clearing the land for the field and clubhouse at Skillbeck Park. A Flanker for The Originals- he was one of the fittest players ever to don the green and orange in the 80’s. Made the ERU select side in 84’. Served as club President in 90’.

Bobby Broome-   (79-91) A wing by trade, was scrum half on fall 83 team that went 10 0. Eagle Dave Dickson was the fly half. Did the “Russian dance” at socials and served as Treasurer. Played on Originals 7’s teams in 80’s and was NC select side in 83’ at center.

Tom Dever-   (78-95) Played for Allentown RFC PA before moving to Charlotte in 78’. Made ERU South team in 79-81 and 84’ and 86’. Club President 79-81’. Put out Newsletter 79-86’. Club coach 94-95’. Played the fullback position.

Mike Lee-   (81-95’) Called the “best Originals forward” during his time. Mike was a  solid 6’1” 220 pds. And was a star at the hooker position for the Originals for years. A NCSU grad., he made the ERU team in 81-82 and was a reserve in the ERU match against South Africa in 81’. Key builder of Skillbeck Park.

Paul Kenney-   (87-95) Played for Roanoke RFC and was on VA select side in 84-86’. Was inside center for Originals known for being a hard tackler- made ERU South Select side in 88’. An avid 7’s player- helped develop Originals 7’s reputation.

Keith Phillip-   (87-93) Wing for Originals. 7’s player also. Sold Olde Originals  t- shirts, golf shirts, caps, and pullovers. Worked for Pat George at Heartwood.

Dean Boylan-   (86-94) A 2nd row and flanker from Guilford College. Has assisted in upkeep of Skillbeck Park over the years.

Chris Roarbaugh-   (89-92’) At 6’6” 250, Chris dominated in the line- out. An ex- college basketball player- he had real reach in the days before “lifting” became legal.

Jake Burkhart-   (89-91) Played on USA Eagles 1984 team- a flanker and number 8 for the Originals. Jake donated the weight machines at Skillbeck Park.

Jimmy Hinkle-   (88-94) Started on A side 92-94 and was on B side team that went to Life College and lost 117-0 against Life A in a schedule mix-up. Other players on  that trip were Joe Nelis, Dave Farley, Mike Kirk, Scott Roy, and Robert Mack, etc.

Bill Jones-   (87-2001) Key player of team that went to ERU final 4. A master at the 7’s game. A center for Originals who teamed with Dave Telford, Kevin Robke, Tom Dever, Rick Avate, Bobby Broome, and others. Became 7’s coach for team.

Dave Telford-   (87-92) At 6’2” 220 pds., Dave could charge right past defenders from Tthe center position and was key in 94’ finals year. South Africa native.

Tony Hubbard-   (86-93) 6’5 250 2nd row who teamed with Jim Cochell, Wally Judd, Chris Roarbaugh, and Mike Vead- to form formidable two-some at 2nd row slots.

Mike Kirk-   (92-98) Played for Norfolk Blues RFC. Very tough 5’10” 250 prop who took over for Jim Hewins in 92’ and teamed with Tom Wilkinson for years before going to the B side. Made trip to Pittsburgh Harlequins in 16-8 loss in 93’.

Phil Langdon-   (88-current) Played for Sidcup RUFC before coming to Originals. Known for kicking skills at scrum half and fly half positions.

Eric Lindley-   (90-96) Former wrestler at Charlotte Independence HS and NCSU graduate. Known as “Mickey’. Moved to Spain. Scrum half for Originals.

Dan Tiernan-   (86-93) A Georgia Tech graduate who played 2nd row for Originals. Teamed with Jim Cochell in 91-93 at 2nd row slots. Built apartment at Skillbeck Park.

Gordon Reid-   (86-97) A very quick flanker with a lot of endurance. Gordon was a  starting flanker on the 94’ finals team. A employee of Heartwood and Pat George- He was key in helping to clear the land of trees and stumps- at Skillbeck Park.

Ryan Williamson-   (1999) Ryan was a Canadian high schooler on exchange here in the US. He started for the Originals that year as the scrum half. Among players  on that team were Billy DeRosa and Brian Figgeroa.

Darryl Davis-   (97-2000) Darryl came to the Originals from Greensboro Triad RFC. At 6’4” 230 pds., Daryl could run and had the size to play at the number 8 position. Scored a try vs. NOVA at National 7’s championships at Philadelphia in 2000.

Bill Benjamin-   (99-current) Played for Princeton Athletic Club. Club President for Originals 2000-02. First road trip: 65-7 loss at Orlando spring 99’.

Jude Crayton-   (99-current) Came to Originals from Greensboro Triad RFC. Avid 7’s player. Club vice-president 2002. On 7’s team that played at 2000 nat. 7’s tourney.

Leo Honus-   (97-current) Originals prospects immediately improved when Leo came to the Originals from Columbia Old Grey RFC SC. His play helped take the Originals to national 7’s championship tournaments in 98, 2000-02.

Frank McKinney-   (92-current) Belmont Abbey College graduate who started career with Originals at the hooker position. Organizes yearly banquet for club.

Paul Maxwell-   (99-2001) 6’1” 210 2nd row with an excellent jump for ball. B side player from Columbia Old Grey RFC SC. Organized youth rugby in Charlotte area.

Lyle Richards-   (95-99) Club President in 96’. B side 2nd row for Originals.

Baron Hanson-   (97-99) UNC-Charlotte graduate who played B side flanker.

Tom Wilkinson-  (88-current) Played for Asheville Iquanas RFC prior to Charlotte. Anchor for Originals at loose head prop for close to 15 years. Played lacrosse in h-s.

Jim Merritt-   (98- current) Played for Columbia Old Grey RFC SC prior to Originals. Thought to be as good as former Originals great Mike Lee. Jim plays the hooker and prop positions. Also played for Sciota Valley RFC OH.

Robert Mack-   (89-2002) Played for Cape Fear (80-82, 86,89) and Raleigh (87-88) before coming to Originals. B- Side prop known for being “the second leading scorer in CF history”. Served spaghetti dinners after matches and Thursday night practices. Also manned the video camera for Originals from 95- 2002. Helped build clubhouse. Known as “keeper of the old man”- carried “old man’s banner on road trips for display.

Kooloe Basoon-   (2001-current) Maybe the best forward to ever play for Originals. An Excellent 7’s player also. South Africa native who plays the number 8 position.
