The “Star” City Center Jason Gillespie sped through host Roanoke for two first half tries from 32 and 56 meters, to help lift visiting Cape Fear to a Hard fought 21-5 victory over Roanoke. Fear ruggers to bring experience, depth to Myrtle Beach in opener 9-04
For the first time since fall 2002, Cape Fear Rugby will travel to Myrtle Beach to take on the USA Rugby South Division 3 member “Kahunas”.

Matches in the past with the Kahunas and the old M B club (folded in 93’) have often Been one-sided affairs.

The old Myrtle Beach Rugby Club that existed from 1985 to 93’ was nearly always blasted by Fear in those early days. The last match that Fear played against the old M B club in 93’ resulted in a 108-7 victory.

Men’s club rugby was resurrected in Myrtle Beach in fall 2001.

September 2002 brought Fear ruggers back to the Grand Strand and the visitors kicked the Kahunas off the beach with a 63-3 victory. It was then decided by the Kahunas to play Fear’s “B” side- the next two matches in fall 03- (Kahunas won 26-5 at Fear) and Spring 04’ (a 17-15 loss at Fear).

The Kahunas are combining with Coastal Carolina Univ. ruggers this fall and expect to field two teams September 4th when they host Fear’s A and B teams.

Coach Nigel White will have a bunch of starters back from the spring and summer seasons- when Fear travels to Beach on the 4th.

Prop Dave Johnson (ECU) will be a force in the front for Fear. Top tackler and 16 year vet number 8 Jaime Wrightman (England) returns for Fear as does Scrum-half Paul Stavolvy (Pittsburgh RFC).

Center Jason Gillespie (UNCW) and fullback John Metzger (UNCW) should be key players this fall for Fear in the backfield, along with wing Symba Glass (South Africa).

Fear ruggers add Shawn Colvin to squad for fall 04’ season.

Shawn Colvin, a fullback and center from Holy Cross University (MA), has signed on to play with Cape Fear Rugby this fall 04’ season. He also played for Wooster RFC (MA).

Fear’s Glass suffers practice injury

Wing Symba Glass (South Africa) suffered a knee injury during a recent August practice and may miss the September 4th opener at Myrtle Beach. One of the fastest members of the team- Symba scored 5 tries for Fear this summer 04’ 7’s season.

Myrtle Beach Kahaunas RFC

The Kahunas have elected three year member and player Calvin Beckmen (Univ. of South Dakota) as their new President. Calvin takes over for Ms. Kelley Lawson (Fredonia State U. NY) who held the office for the 2003 season. Kelley was key in helping to hold the Kahunas together this spring along with husband and player Ed Lawson (Alfred Univ. NY). The Kahunas suffered greatly when Coastal Carolina University started their own rugby club fall 2003- the club didn’t field a full team on the road since spring 2003- a full year of playing short.

Brett Ferreria
(Falcon College Zimbabwe)
pitches ball out vs. Cherry Point 2003

Burroughs, Kegler, Lawson, Van Arenum, and West- expected to lead Kahunas fall 04’. Leading try scorer fullback Larry Burroughs (8 tries) is expected to be back for the Kahunas this fall 2004 season. Larry punched in three tries in the last match of the season vs. Stoney Brook U. NY- including one on a kickoff from approx. 75 meters. Number 8 Robert Kegler (Alfred Univ. NY) was the second leading scorer with 6 tries-
Including one against the Camp Lejuene Marines from approx 70 meters away during a heavy rainstorm in a March 04 home match.

Dudley Floyd
(Johannesburg Wanderers SA)
kicks past Cherry Point ruggers 2003

Ed Lawson (Alfred Univ. NY) is expected to return at the tight head prop position for the Kahunas and may help at the second row slots. Ed is a three year starter for the Kahunas.

Flanker Chris West (South Pittsburgh RFC) returns for the Kahunas. Chris scored on a 5- meter penalty play in the first half- to lift the host Kahunas to a conference upset of the Ft. Bragg All-Americans, 5-0, in the last conference match of the spring 04’ season.

Vice-President Brian Van Arenum (Albany Knickerbockers RFC NY) is expected to come back to the playing field for the Kahunas after a year absence with a foot injury. He may help at the scrum-half position (for the departed Brett Ferreria) or at the hooker and flanker positions.

Elliot Rechtin
(Coastal Carolina University)
shakes off Cherry Pointy tackler 2003

Kahunas get Wright for fall 2004 to help at fullback and center positions……..Lake City SC native Colby Wright will play for the Kahunas this fall 04’ season.
